I don't think Bitcoin has proven anything. People are still only just starting to grasp the true scale of the externalities that it creates. Completely abandoning all governance capabilities is mental, and there really isn't any justification for taking a systemic risk so stupid.
The only reason it's got as far as it has is because the vast majority of people don't actually understand what they're buying into. Bitcoin/blockchains, by their very design, create an incentive structure which makes people pursue this course of action aggressively without the least bit of concern or consideration of the externalities.
Most involved aren't even aware of the systemic risks and, worse, they actively resist being made aware of them and have developed strong social mechanisms for stifling and dismissing opposition.
It's pretty clearly a termite-colony-like mess of ideological thinking and pathological group behaviour, and other than our vulnerability to well-designed mind viruses, I can't see what it proves.
